Career Pathways

Industry Councils

Three separate industry/education councils will guide development of career pathways in the three clusters. Representatives from industry cluster businesses, education and training facilities, workforce development organizations, social service providers, government agencies and the target audience group make up each council. A CVEP Industry Council Coordinator facilitates the work of each council.

Career pathways developed by each council will include elements such as linked curricula, degree programs, job training programs and other educational resources for the preparation of students for new careers in emerging industries in the Coachella Valley.

Healthcare Industry Council
  • The council is reviewing the career/pathways models as developed by the National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium to more accurately depict the regional job market.

  • The council has overseen the Health Careers Exploration Field Trips during the 2005-2006 school year in the Palm Springs Unified School District. These field trips are being funded through a $10,000 grant from the Desert Healthcare District secured jointly by CVEP and the PSUSD as part of the career pathways initiative.
  • A new healthcare pathway being explored for a potential Health Careers Academy Desert Hot Springs High School. This council will serve as the advisory group for the district and this new academy.
  • The Healthcare Council Coordinator, is working with the Public Health Institute/Diabetes Task Force at Coachella Valley High School to determine ways CVEP's Career Pathways project might assist in expansion of career and educational opportunities for health academy/public health institute students in the eastern Coachella Valley.
  • A new environmental health sciences/health care services pathway is being explored for Cathedral City High School and members of the Healthcare Industry Council are participating in the development of this program.
  • A new culinary arts academy with Dietician/Nutrition specialty path is being developed for Ramon Alternative School with members of the Healthcare Industry Council.

Advanced Technology Industry Council
  • The council's "Green Build" Subcommittee is working to develop new Environmental Sciences/Green Build pathway at the Horizon School, the alternative education high school in Desert Sands Unified School District. They are also assisting to develop similar new programs at Palm Springs Unified School District and Coachella Valley Unified School District.
  • The Council has identified an excellent opportunity to partner with College of the Desert's Energy Technology Training Center program and their Advanced Transportation Technology Initiative.
  • The Council is working to attract students to math and science studies and to provide continuing education for math and science faculty. As a result, the council and the auto shop instructor at Palm Springs High School / PSUSD will develop a student team to compete with a solar car in the national "Winston Solar Car Challenge" Race.
  • The council is exploring opportunities to partner with Dr. Pam Clute and the ALPHA Center, at the University of California, Riverside. Dr. Clute is very interested in working with the council to expand faculty education programs and K-12 student enrichment programs in desert.

Multimedia Industry Council

The council is actively participating in the Multimedia Mentor Program at Cathedral City High School.

  • The program is funded by a $30,000 grant from the Anderson Children's Foundation.
  • 18 industry council members are actively participating as mentors.
  • The council is arranging industry and education related fieldtrips for students.
  • The council is providing industry expertise for students' monthly television show produced at Desert Cities Time Warner Cable. The council is working to connect multimedia instructors at all three local K-12 districts and the county's ROP program.
